That Kitty and Mary are with Mrs. Bennett when the letter is read to her is some slight evidence that they 'changed' (started helping with Mrs. Bennett) when Elizabeth returned home. Presumably, while Jane and Elizabeth were out walking, they were to be Mrs. Bennett's attendants, allowing their sisters a brief respite.
