Changing my mind   Written by Frances G (5/10/2010 11:37 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Another opinion on Chamberlayne, penned by Line
Are you new?

I always thought that Chamberlayne was a servant, since a servant would have been required to go along with just about anything his mistress wanted. But after all of the discussion, I've changed my mind.

I've been thinking about this sentence When Denny, and Wickham, and Pratt, and two or three more of the men came in, they did not know him in the least. After studying it carefully, I am convinced that officers who only frequent the Phillips home occasionally would not have recognized any of the servants. They wouldn't have paid enough attention to them, with the possible exception of the head butler or housekeeper.

So, if it's a joke that the officers don't know Chamberlayne, then he must be an officer himself. Perhaps he went along with it because he was infatuated with Lydia.
