Thanks for highlighting this for us. It is so easy to gloss over what exactly is going on with Mr. Bennet here -- one almost does think he feels some blame, but you are so right: he is what he always has been. In comparison, how much more sensible Mrs. Bennet appears in trying to ensure the future of herself and her girls by marrying one of them to Mr. Collins!! (;D) ....with Mr. Bennet in charge of the future of his daughters, seems a hopeless business indeed!
