Lydia wouldn't have to run away with a soldier and end up "on the town" for her to do serious damage to the family's reputation, as Lizzy clearly points out.

The situation is that the girls have little chance of marrying well, and Lydia's bad reputation, even if she didn't go that far, could change that from little to none. That sounds like a real evil to me.
