I think it would only be a Hot Button   Written by Nancy Ann (5/7/2010 11:15 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Should Have Been a Hot Button, penned by Lenora
Are you new?

if 'tolerable' were a very sparingly-used word at the time, thus standing out in one particular situation very strongly. If an everyday word, used several times daily by many and almost mindlessly, the 'heat' diminishes greatly. To readers 200 years later and not using the term daily or mindlessly (and looking for every possible clue like literary detectives) it can be a trigger for sure! But would it have been one for JA? Not sure. I'd have to see a list of slang and jargon from the time, to be sure. If in common usage, it would fall more nearly in the category of "in vain" and "disagreeable"....or in the category of "like" and "no way!" to us.
