If Lydia's behavior becomes bad enough to threaten the respectability of the family, and thus the possibility that the other daughters could marry respectable men, this could turn out to be a very expensive decision in the long run, even if it is a good deal in the short run.

However, I think you are right about his thought processes in that Mr. Bennet is not much of a long-term thinker.
