We are perhaps falling into the common trap of reading P&P backwards! ;-) One more thing: Lydia was a very young girl from a respectable family, with no fortune, and as someone later says, actually staying in the Colonel's family. IMO, the double standard between "nice girls" and "bad girls" probably meant more to (most) officers than we realize, especially at first.
