What is (almost) everyone here suggesting to a first-time...   Written by Adrian (5/7/2010 2:50 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Insensible to Danger, penned by Robbin
Are you new?

...reader? Does Mr. Bennet, does Lizzy think Lydia is going to Brighton intentionally to lose her virginity? That is what I mean by "stupid;" this is not a question of education. Does Mr. Bennet think Lydia is ultimately self-destructive?

Sure, JA creates suspense here in a reader's mind, but should Mr. Bennet think Lydia so totally depraved, as silly as she may be? Did Sir Thomas think that of Maria in MP? (Don't answer that here!) I can agree that Mr. Bennet was wrong to allow Lydia to go to Brighton. I can say he should have listened to Lizzy. But I do not think the case is so open and shut as so many (possibly non-first-time readers) do.
