As we focus in astonishment over Mr. Bennett's rationalization of allowing Lydia to go to Brighton, let's not overlook the economy of this decision.

[Mr. Bennett] "Lydia will never be easy till she has exposed herself in some public place or other, and we can never expect her to do it with so little expense or inconvenience to her family as under the present circumstances."

That is, Mr. Bennett will have peace and quiet while Lydia is gone and it will be at little expense to him. What a deal!
