Sorry, I can't be objective on this one because I have a cousin who's very much like Lydia. Too close to the problem. But I doubt whether anything could deflate Lydia's ego. She's been let go on just as she pleases for far too long and when Lizzy makes the comment to her father about how "she will be beyond the reach of amendment" I'm afraid my first response is, "Already too late."

She brings to mind a stand-up comic I heard once giving a routine about "Have you ever seen kids so bad you want to beat their parents?" Yes, indeed, and the Bennet parents both deserve a few good whacks for allowing things to come to this pass.
