...it better. You have opened my eyes on many occasions. But your message is short, and I am not sure what you meant.

In my view of your quotation, I wonder which Mr. Darcy is here mentioned. This could be "our" Mr. Darcy validating to Wickham's father that he would honor Old Mr. Darcy's deathbed promise to Wickham pere.

(Having looked at the entire paragraph from which this quote came, I can see that, to interpret it as I have, I would have to accept a rather radical shift in the references to "Mr. Darcy" in the passage. It is indeed a puzzle.)
