... clearing up a misconception for me. I did not understand that a governess was considered gentle. If I had thought at all about a companion, I would not have been sure, but would have believed her to be considered gentle.

I did understand that dependent old maids from gentle families were considered gentle, even when they were without prosperous relatives and had to depend upon the church and community.
