I did not think Jane Austin would have made a mistake like this. It makes sense that the children were left home on a holiday that was geared to mainly adult participation. I also wonder if parents preferred to travel with children in warmer times of year only. We do not always consider how difficult travel was at that time and having 4 small children along would compound the difficulties.
