Janeinfo answers this   Written by Stephanie (5/3/2010 2:31 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, I guess my question would be, penned by Theresa Marie

According to JaneInfo, the excess expense and inconvenience of bringing four children, servants for them, and accouterments, for what was simply a short, adult-themed visit was probably the reason the adult Gardiners came alone at Christmas. There is no implication elsewhere that Jane Austen forgot plot-points in Pride and Prejudice, so I do not believe she did here, either.
