If she's gone to Rosings to "stop Collins making an ass of himself" wtih his excessive toadying, isn't that just her own common sense thinking that "if William makes a prat of himslef, other people and Lady C may think he's such a fool that he doesn't deserve any ohter livigns that might be on offer".


It has nothing ot do with trying to make Mr C look less ridiculous out of concern for his dignty, or out of affection for him. Its just that as his wife, she probably feels that his making a fool of himself reflect on her and may stop him from getting what he wants, i.e more patronage and kindness from Lady C

adn certianly LIZZY thinks that her visits to Rosings are to butter up lady C and not out of any "pure" motives...
