In that case, my idea shall retreat into Elizabeth's POV   Written by Tom P2 (5/2/2010 6:33 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Not really, penned by Adrian
Are you new?

I see that in drawing that parallel, I used something from after the refusal: Elizabeth's reference to Jane's disappointed hopes and misery of the acutest kind. OK, that's not really admissible into Mr Darcy's plans going into the proposal, including how he'd face Mr Bingley afterward.

Still, from Elizabeth's point of view** as at chapter 34:

  • She never even meant to encourage him, and definitely isn't attached to him like Jane's attached to Mr Bingley.

  • His only known reason for interfering is the Bennet family's low connections, unless I've missed something from earlier.

So, even though Elizabeth disdained the appearance of noticing this civil reflection, there was at least one Indignant Outburst option open to her.

**I know that that's not what you were replying to, Adrian; this is a digression
