in consequence of the missive, Darcy made no answer, and seemed desirous of changing the subject, penned by Stephanie
They are talking about distances and traveling. I think what he means when he says " you could not have always been at Longbourn," is 'surely you have traveled to the extent to have seen enough places to not be so attached to Longbourne'. In other words he thinks, she should not have any trouble adapting to a new place if necessary. Just mho. :)
