Darcy convinced Bingley that Jane was not in love with him. If Lizzy were interested in Darcy, the situation would not be parallel to what Darcy had (incorrectly) represented to Bingley. So the suggestion that Bingley picked the wrong sister or was not persuasive enough would not hold. Darcy (and so far as we know, Bingley) believed that he could have married Jane but would then be sorry.
