Are you new?

JA was a woman of her time and place, as we all are, but I think the most fundamental premise of feminism is that a woman's life *matters* simply because she exists, not just because she is an extension of her father, her brother, her husband, her son, her male boss or any other man, and that she has a right to be an actor, not just a reactor in the world around her. As for advocating for change, the arguments during this GR about whether JA (via Elizabeth) was "too idealistic" in insisting on respect and affection as well as financial suppport in marriage are proof enough for me that this was a somewhat revolutionary idea at the time!
