Ladies/women - who?   Written by Reeba (5/1/2010 6:57 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Charlotte's choice, Austen's feminism?, penned by Heather Leigh
Are you new?

It doesn't seem like feminism, in the sense we know, where it is meant for women in general.

We see JA taking the side of men as well.

She shows that those women who have *Rights* like Lady Catherine and Mrs Ferrars, tend to misuse these rights.

A woman (Emma) is made to learn to respect a man regardless of his situation in life - Robert Martin (not a gentleman even).

Of course women were allowed to work or choose who they wanted to marry!!
Only Ladies didn't.

I see JA attemping at *balancing things out*, where a Mrs Goddard could run a school, and if Mr Bennet thinks all girls and Mrs Bennet are silly, JA is happy to come up with a silly man.

I see JA showing what was wrong in society - *regardless of the gender*.

I also feel that if JA was being revolutionary in P&P by coming up with feminist ideas she wouldn't have called P&P too light and too sparkling.
