Yes, I understand the first part meaning (to Darcy's predisposed mind), "Surely, you do not want to stay at Longbourne." The second part is still stilted and hard for me to fathom. But YOU think it is meant as a disparagement of Elizabeth's companions at home? Complimenting her on the way, but, still...
Hmm. I will have to roll that one around in my mind for a bit. I do not know if I agree with you or not. Initially, it does not seem Darcy's type of gambit, even if the idea had snuck up on him and burst out before he realized what he said. But I have not anything better to offer.
