but that doesn't mean they would socialize w/ the higher ranking people. There might be a few other families of Lady Catherine's rank (or close) who would entertain in a style that is beyond the Collinses ability to reciprocate -- or the other families might not wish to socialize w/ a clergyman & his wife.

And I agree that not all higher-ranking people would have superior intellect -- Lady Catherine & her daughter are prime examples, after all. :-) But those are the people who are most likely to be educated, nonetheless.
