I can (and do) doubt that Mr Collins loves   Written by kathleen (elder) (4/30/2010 6:21 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Life as a Nun, penned by Aaron
Are you new?

Charlotte. I see no evidence that Mr Collins loved Charlotte when he proposed -- he proposed because he needed to return to Kent an engaged man (per Lady Catherine's order instruction). Charlotte appeared to him to be ready to accept such a proposal. No love on either side. As for Mr Collins growing to love Charlotte, I don't see that either, though I do expect him to have a fondness for he that he thinks is love.

Charlotte will be sharing her life with a pompous fool, a man whose opinions she surely cannot respect. And I see nothing in the novel to indicate that she was pining for love or the physical part of marriage. Marriage was her object, not the husband.

As for assuming that life as a spinster is so lonely that a woman should be willing to sell herself trade that life for such a husband, well, I've said it all before and there's nothing new to add.
