in consequence of the missive, Advice to Lizzy from others regarding Wickham, penned by Karen G
It strikes me that perhaps Mr. Bennet's teasing is to make a point to Lizzy about her behavior with Wickham, just as Mrs. Gardiner's more candid communications do. I would say Jane's good fortune is to care for a man who admires her, who is a very agreeable man and has a good income and economic situation.
Reminds me of something I did with my then 4-year-old neice who is a bright little girl, but who was very interested in cookies. I had bought her a little stuffed animal dog who I then proceeded to play with it with her, and the dog ONLY liked cookies but then wouldn't feel well, since only cookies was bad for it. Surprisingly, my little neice caught on to admonishing her dog to eat its vegetables, because all cookies aren't good for you. Ok, a bit of a stretch, but perhaps same approach Mr. Bennet takes with Lizzy here. Tease her into seeing more prudence in her own behavior.
