They contain no asides even about things Lizzy will discover when she visits (the arrangement of the sitting room and Mr. Collins's study, for example). I do not think either Lizzy or Charlotte is surprised by this change in their relationship. I see it not so much as a friendship built on a bad foundation as a friendship that has changed as the friends have grown and their situations and tempers have changed. Charlotte's engagement and marriage to Mr. Collins point out to both young ladies the nature of the situation that has developed over time. They are still friends, but not so close.
