in consequence of the missive, Advice to Lizzy from others regarding Wickham, penned by Karen G
not very far from Lizzy's: "and though I should certainly be a more interesting object to all my acquaintance were I distractedly in love with him, I cannot say that I regret my comparative insignificance. Importance may sometimes be purchased too dearly." (Ch. 26).
But I think our interpretation depends not only on how we see Mr Bennet, but also on our own personal history, how we talk to our friends and family etc. What Mr Bennet said here would be considered a very harmless joke where I am from and no one would think twice about it. Maybe there is a clue to his "true" personality hidden away in this speech and I can't see it, but I guess this is somewhat like Charlotte marrying Mr Collins - some are fine with it, some are not.
