Charlotte the wife of Mr. Collins was a most humiliating picture! And to the pang of a friend disgracing herself and sunk in her esteem, was added the distressing conviction that it was impossible for that friend to be tolerably happy in the lot she had chosen. (Ch. 22)
“Best friends forever” is a lovely concept but hard to live up to as people change and sometimes it just turns out they never were quite what you believed them to be all along. Charlotte’s choice affects their friendship because it reveals that she is not quite the person Lizzy believed her to be. I think Lizzy’s reaction shows maturity and honesty. Lizzy realizes that Charlotte’s willingness to sacrifice “every better feeling to worldly advantage” changes how she feels about her and I think that is reason enough to reexamine their relationship.
