...some day needing a living if he managed to acquire the education and take orders. Being on good terms with Mr. Darcy if Lizzy becomes his wife need not just be to Mr. Collins's benefit. I think Charlotte's philosophy is not to burn bridges unnecessarily.

If Lady Catherine dies, IIRC Mr. Collins continues to hold the Hunsford living for life.
