in consequence of the missive, Very good analysis. As I posted below, in Emma we have, penned by AnnetteJ
Charlotte Lucas is one side of JA and Elizabeth Bennet is the other. Should JA have married because she like Charlotte where at an age when it would be her last chance? Or JA, like Lizzie would stay single and true to the idea that love is the reason for marriage or at least a healthy respect? Perhaps and I believe I have posted this before, JA uses the Charlotte, Mr. Collins and Elizabeth triangle in P&P as a way of working through her own feelings about the subject. How many of us want to act like Lizzie and stand by our convictions all else aside but settle like Charlotte for the convenience and comfort to our lives. It is a braver thing that Lizzie does by refusing, but she is at an age where meeting a man would still be possible, and aren’t the young more likely to do such things as stand by ideals. It is when we are older and a little more wiser like Charlotte that we can justify settling and even tolerate the annoyance for the sake of comfort.
