and she married into the gentry. Did Mrs Bennet have any accomplishments? I suspect that Mrs Bennet felt that beauty & good humour (Jane and/or Lydia) would be adequate to attract an eligible man -- assuming any such men were within reach!

And I doubt that Mrs Bennet would ever have thought that her daughters ought to read as much as Mary does. :-)
