In Sense and Sensibility, Author Austen notes:

"Every qualification is raised at times, by the circumstances of the moment, to more than its real value; [...]"

I think she implies this in other places in her work, as well, here being one. Sometimes gossip is a good thing, sometimes prudence in marriage matters is a good thing, sometimes some ignorance of one's parents, friends, or neighbors is a good thing...

I think this shows one of Jane Austen's cutting knowledge of human natures. Tripping over things like this is why I like rereading her work!
