Rhinoceros   Written by Tom P2 (4/25/2010 6:49 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, An unhappy alternative is before you (long), penned by Connie
Are you new?

Elizabeth and her father have shown some lapses in judgment, so I wouldn't quite take them as spokespeople for Jane Austen.

However, Mr Collins has sunk himself in another way, beyond what the other characters and the narrator focus on. His gallant speech at the Netherfield ball ("Pardon me for neglecting to profit by your advice, which on every other subject shall be my constant guide..." --ch18) turns out to be a big lie when he again refuses to take Elizabeth seriously, over her refusal of his proposal. This bodes poorly for his eventual wife: trapped in a household with a powerful, thick-skinned, short-sighted, uncertain-tempered creature.

Charlotte doesn't get to see this side of him as soon as Elizabeth does.
