Use of foreign words   Written by Anne-Marie (4/25/2010 9:05 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, BTW using French, penned by OlgaI
Are you new?

I take it as a bit of showing off and snobbery -- either to show the speaker has studied the language (although perhaps not learned it very well) or even to make others think that the speaker has been to France or Italy. I think Caroline is flaunting her expensive education at Jane's expense, since she must know from their acquaintance that Jane was not sent to one of the finest ladies' seminaries.
