I was taken aback this week at the reaction of Mrs. Lucas to Charlotte's marriage to the heir of Longbourn.
Lady Lucas began directly to calculate, with more interest than the matter had ever excited before, how many years longer Mr. Bennet was likely to live; (ch. 22)
Lady Lucas could not be insensible of triumph on being able to retort on Mrs. Bennet the comfort of having a daughter well married; and she called at Longbourn rather oftener than usual to say how happy she was, though Mrs. Bennet's sour looks and ill-natured remarks might have been enough to drive happiness away. (ch. 23)
Now, I know that Mrs. Bennet and Mrs. Lucas are not exactly bosom beaus, that there is a rivalry between them, but calculating how long Mr. Bennat has to live? Calling at Longbourn more often than usual to rub Mrs. Bennet's face in it? I don't know. That goes beyond rivalry, I think.
What do you think of Mrs. Bennet's and Mrs. Lucas's relationship? Just neighborhood grand dames trying to one-up each other? Or is there something darker beneath their interactions?
