I think that Darcy wants to be near Elizabeth and in that he asks her to dance. I think that he is confused about his attraction to Lizzie and even though he doesn't want to like her in that manner he can't help himself. His conversations are short and perhaps thats due to his being shy but I think its more because he is conflicted.
