So he could have come in his own carriage. But that would mean that he was keeping horses for it, wouldn't it? Would a clergyman have that kind of income?

I wonder who would have to ride with him if he was driving his own carriage! He'd probably explain all about the carriage and the horse(s) for the entire trip! (Like John Thorpe in my imagination!)
