(even to Mr Collins) to judge him by modern standards. In Jane Austen's day the Church was seen by many as a job rather than a calling, mission or vocation - a useful way of providing for younger sons or helping poor relations. Just consider how few of her clerics, even the ones much more attractive than Mr Collins, show any signs of a vocation in the modern sense.
