How little Mrs. Bennet understands her second daughter!   Written by Karen G (4/22/2010 10:07 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, As an only child and the mother of an only child that sentiment, penned by AnnetteJ
Are you new?

Elizabeth is her least favorite and also least understood (kind of like she still can't read her husband after 23 years of marriage.) I was struck with reading Mrs. Bennet's anticipation of Elizabeth's acceptance of Mr. Collin's proposal (Ch. 20) how little thought Mrs. B actually gave to how Elizabeth would receive this offer, even should she have taken the hints Elizabeth gave when Mr. Collins first applied Mrs. B for a private audience with Elizabeth (talk about wilfully misunderstanding a daughter!)

And it is so good the Elizabeth has a forgiving nature, because while Mrs. Bennet didn't forgive her daughter for many months, in a modern sense I could imagine a daughter not forgiving a mother for that length of time or longer for what she tried to force her daughter into. But that reflects the changes in the times as well.
