the most like her father   Written by Heather Leigh (4/22/2010 7:10 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, "The least dear to her of all her children" ch18, penned by Benedicte
Are you new?

Lizzie seems to be the only one of the girls who combines her father's intelligence, wit, and ironic outlook. Her mother can't understand or value these qualities in a young woman.

Ch. 1 suggests that she values beauty and good humor:

[Mrs B:] "Lizzy is not a bit better than the others; and I am sure she is not half so handsome as Jane, nor half so good-humoured as Lydia."

Beauty and good humor (when her nerves are at ease) were her own qualities of course!

So Lizzie's main strengths of character don't count for her mother, and her mother even perceives them as faults - as when she describes her as a "headstrong, foolish girl" and an "undutiful" child for refusing Mr. Collins.
