...discovered what he was marrying into, perhaps Mr. Bennet (although he certainly could have) stood back to let Bingley have a clear view of what he might be getting himself into. For whatever reason Mr. Bennet did not head off his wife's bungling machinations, I am not surprised that he took pleasure in seeing her thwarted.

This is not to say his actions made sense or were justified; they were irresponsible. Still, there may have been some (warped) thinking behind them.
