And every single woman of the time should have accepted the first offer she got? You agree that Elizabeth was correct to refuse Mr Collins, right? But shouldn't she be leaving her "child-like existence" as much as Charlotte?

Sorry, I cannot agree that marrying a pompous fool (& having his children) is a good decision. Charlotte could have been a great help to her parents in their old age; she could have been a help to her siblings (& any families that they have) -- this does not mean she would continue to be in a "child-like existence." I see nothing in the text to indicate that remaining w/ her family is "near-certain misery," either.

Marrying a stupid man is not, imo, a better choice -- it is much, much worse.
