Uneasy about their friendship?   Written by Line (4/22/2010 9:45 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, You know, ..., penned by gianni
Are you new?

I find it very interesting that you feel uneasy about the friendship between Elizabeth and Charlotte, Gianni. IMHO, that's a very modern attitude. Today, we take it for granted that children should associate mainly with other children very close in age, but in JA's day, and still today in remote places where the local population is small and they don't have school systems like ours, you took your friends where you could find them, and I'm sure both Elizabeth and Charlotte were grateful to have at least *one* local friend of similar intelligence and interests! As another example, I believe one of the teenaged JA's great friends was Mrs. Lefroy, a grown woman and wife of a clergyman.
