Today, if a friend married an abusive spouse, staying their friend would be most important to help with the options to exit the relationship. The importance THEN, might be that you would need the support to bear it as best you may. But, none of this applies to Mr. Collins. He is of good character, gentle temper, and an upright profession that will increase both as much as possible. No one has anything to say about those qualities: it is his intellect, manner, and rank-consciousness that bothers Elizabeth (and others, I dare say). So, if knowing that, Charlotte still chooses him, Elizabeth's surprise is understandable. But she does not cut off the friendship: she has learned to question Charlotte's views, but she is still her friend. |
