Distance   Written by Elizabeth K (4/21/2010 8:11 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, and the convenient distance [] from London, penned by Stephanie
Are you new?

I think you are right, Stephanie. Mrs. Bennet appears to be referring solely to the distance. York was certainly not a horrible place or a place of punishment. It was a very pleasant place (and still is! I visit frequently) in Georgian times when it became known as "the social centre of the north" (from this link: Georgian history of York)

According to the online Regency Encyclopedia, the distance from Longbourn to York using a private coach is 140 miles and would take 4 days. So a visit from Longbourn to York and back would take 8 days in total!
