Not announcing Mr. Collins' visit   Written by Louise H (4/20/2010 2:04 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Over the Top Games, penned by Robbin
Are you new?

Every time I read the scene where Mr. Bennet reads Mr. Collins' letter, I'm appalled that he did not give his wife more advance notice that she was going to have a guest for a week. He'd known this for a month, but he tells her the morning of the visit!

No doubt Mrs. Bennet keeps a nice clean house and can accommodate an extra mouth to feed if necessary, but any hostess would want more notice than this. It's outrageously disrespectful to her, to keep this information to himself.

At first I thought this silence was just to give himself the pleasure of springing the information on the family at the last minute. On reflection, though, he likely didn't want to have to hear Mrs. B talking about the visit -- and reviling Mr. Collins as a usurper -- beforehand. Somewhat understandable. But still unforgivable.
