With the prospect of the entailed property, he might certainly have looked elsewhere and hoped for a favourable reaction, without ever trying to mend the breach with Mr. Bennet and offer for one of his fair cousins.

He may well have heard that at least some of them were beautiful, and he may well be conceited and silly, but he still did try to do the right thing and had a right, I think, to imagine that a young woman in the situation the Bennet girls were in would be happy to marry him.
