Are you new?

that can give a whole new aspect to the Lucas/Collins marriage. It has been a while since I read it, but if I remember correctly, the author makes a point that the objection to Charlotte's marriage IS more on the level of intellectual incompatablity (what we might call now "settling" for Mr Collins)rather than a sexual shrinking back from the man himself, which has sometimes been given as the reason Lizzie distances herself from her friend. Charlotte wants to marry and she has already indicated that romantic love is not a requirement, nor is knowing much about the person. At a time when some marriages were still arranged for dynastic or other economic reasons, the conventional wisdom was that people would, if they were lucky, learn to love each other. Lizzy apparently feels differently.
