It is likely that he really doesn't know how to behave in the presence of those with money and rank, and so he bows and scrapes to anyone he perceives as a superior. He's also somewhat obsessed with money, talking about how much Lady Catherine paid for a mantelpiece and insisting that his small losses at cards don't really matter because of his income. I think he and Lady Catherine are very lucky to have found each other!
