Are you new?

I'm starting to think that because *Mrs. Bennet's*, not Elizabeth's, was the commonly-accepted attitude at the time (A girl, especially a fortuneless girl, must marry no matter what), JA had to make Mrs. B. especially ridiculous to get her readers to see how harmful this idea could be. Meanwhile, we modern readers see her ridiculousness without always quite realizing what she was up against, IMO.
