consensus on the board is that she is beyond redemption. I obviously don't agree with the consensus, but other mothers, or mother figures, in Austen's works sometimes don't come off too well. Actually, not just mothers but fathers too are not spared -- Emma's father is just as silly IMO as Mrs. Bennet. Parents are not always respected figures in Austen's writings.
